This award, won against strong competition, is Living Landscapes limited’s fourth major award since

1985 and confirms a consistently high standard and quality of workmanship.

“This is an exceptionally well thought-out design providing a succession of widely differing landscape experiences” said the Awards Adjudicating Panel. “Roof gardens, gardens with a historical theme, lakeside gardens, and meadows with wild flowers all have their place in a wealth of horticultural variety which must have taxed Living Landscapes to the limit”.

The scheme was constructed on a ten hectare site of the purpose built head offices of Pearl Assurance pl, at The Pearl Centre, Lynch Wood, Peterborough.

It was designed in Professor Weddle’s office and taken to completion by Mike Browell of Weddle Landscape Design, Sheffield.

The spectacular Physic Garden, comprising of culinary and medicinal herbs, has proved a great favourite with Pearl Assurance staff. Similarly, the Formal Garden, with its traditional parterre bedding scheme and alternating winter and summer planting, gives much delight to the staff for they are able to see the flowering plants from the windows of the office building, as well as to walk through the heady scent in spring and summer.

“From the purchase and preparation of plants, which included 75,000 trees and shrubs of 500 varieties, to the specialised handling of the entrance courtyard and Physic garden, both constructed on the roof of the two storey underdeck car park with its 1500 parking spaces, the entire scheme exudes excellence”, further commented the Adjudication panel.

“The carefully designed irrigation planning and detailed attention to such maintenance matters as the mower height on the grass areas have combined to create a stunningly successful scheme which most certainly has lived up to the designer’s expectations”
